for a Healthier Life Style Purchase a NuWave of FlavorWave Oven Looking for a quick and healthy way to prepare your meals? Try one of the mini convection ovens on the market – the FlavorWave or the the NuWave Oven. These ovens use halogen heat, infrared waves, and convection technology to cook the food. The result is food that is bursting with flavor and nutrients. Unlike a microwave that can cook up the moisture making poultry, fish and steak very dry, food prepared in these ovens is very moist.

| The
cost of the FlavorWave
is about $150.00 and $120.00 for the NuWave.
Both ovens can be ordered online and I have learned that the NuWave
can be found in some stores. Since purchasing the FlavorWave Oven, I rarely use the traditional oven. I purchased frozen breaded flounder and brushed it with olive oil on both side. I then placed in then FlavorWave for 18 minutes and it came out perfectly. It tasted as if it had been fried without all of the oil. You can prepare vegetables, bread – anything that you would normally prepare in your regular oven can be prepared on these mini wonders! The cost of the FlavorWave is about $150.00 and $120.00 for the NuWave. Both ovens can be ordered online and I have learned that the NuWave can be found in some stores. |

Food with Olive or Canola Oil For those times when you just have to have fried foods – and let’s face it, fried food is delicious, use olive or canola oil. They are both low in saturated fats. Saturated fat has been linked to heart disease and hardening of the arteries. According to The American Heart Organization, Eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood. High levels of blood cholesterol increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Look for Low-Carb or Gluten Pastas Many of us concerned about weight control have accepted that we may have to give up the lasagna or the fettuccini alfredo because of the carbs or the gluten contained in the semolina used to make most pasta. There are definitely options available to that you can still “have your pasta and eat it too.”
When preparing your pasta, cook it al dente. The literal meaning is "to the tooth." In cooking this translates to a little firm, not mushy. There is a tendency to overcook pasta. When pasta is prepared al dente, more of the fiber remains. |

Eat Bread Made from Grains or Sprouts If you are a bread eater, try to stay away from white bread. White flour is probably one of the most nutritionally void “foods” that can be consumed. All of the vitamins, nutrients and fiber have been stripped – with all of the fiber of the wheat kernel being removed. It is then bleached, leaving you with empty calories and simple carbohydrates which are quickly converted to fat. Food for Life is a company that specializes in products that never use conditioners, additives, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. They also offer Low Glycemic / Diabetic Friendly products and Gluten Free / Wheat Free as well. Many of their products are sold in stores. You may pay a little more but the extra cost is for the quality. Create Your Own Trail Mix This is a great way to satisfy your sweet craving, while remaining healthy??? One of my favorite creations is sunflower seeds (shelled), white chocolate chips, dried cranberries and cashews or peanuts. Grab a handful when you need some quick energy and that sweet craving will just not subside. Be careful not to go trail mix crazy because the nuts are high in fat. Although nuts are generally low in carbs and high in fiber, eating too many of them can add a pound or two. Liven Up Your Food with Salsa There are many types of salsa available that can be used with many different kinds of food, not just tortilla chips. My favorite is mango and peach salsa. Try it with an omelet or with fish dishes. It can also satisfy a sweet tooth when you just have to have that sugar fix. The different salsas can usually be found in the ethnic food section or where the cold foods are located at your grocery store. It's also a healthy addition to your diet. |
